As some of you know, I’m moving back to New York City to start a new adventure.
A few days ago, my fabulous friend Megan gave me a going away present – a book (of course) titled This Is New York by M. Sasek, originally published in 1960.
So, in the spirit transitioning Laura Reviews to kick off TJCC, I thought I’d share a very short and sweet book review.
This Is New York is a children’s book. For both native New Yorkers and visitors, this needs to be on your book shelf, if it isn’t already.
It opens with a wonderful statement: “New York is the largest city in the Western Hemisphere and is full of the Biggest Things.”
Smile.
In my opinion, here is one of the best excerpts, containing many of my favorite things: shopping, global cultures and of course, New York City.
New York is the home of the United Nations with its more then eighty member countries.* People from all of them are at home in New York.
So you can shop in any language – in German, Yiddish, Spanish, Czech and Slovak, Hungarian, Russian and even English!
This Is New York is quick, fun and for all ages. We’d strongly suggest you add it to your cultural library.
For a bit of conversation: Are you passionate about where you live? Leave us a comment and tell us where and why. We’d love to know.
Editor’s note: This is a continuation of the book review series originally launched at Laura Reviews. More book reviews to come.*The UN had 80 member nations as of the book’s publishing date in 1960.

Love it – so proud to be a part of your opening post for the JCC (PS it is quite challenging for me not to immediatelly follow that with "yeah you know me")
Chi-town will miss you! Save me a seat in NYC :)
That's so awesome! I love it :)
Thanks Megan – I will miss you too, but we are only a GTalk away :)
Thanks Christa! You're always such a great supporter!
wonderful transition, Laura. i'm excited to see what comes next, though i only know it will be just as perfect as Laura Reviews.
I just bought the "This is San Francisco" version by the same author as a gift for my nephew. I love these books!
Hey Jennifer – I think I'll need to buy each one – I hadn't known there were the other ones out there. Love it!
