You can teach a student a lesson for a day; but if you can teach him to learn by creating curiosity, he will continue the learning process as long as he lives. ~Clay P. Bedford

As 2009 ends, so 2010 begins.

While I don’t formally make resolutions when the New Year arrives, I always look forward to fresh starts. Renewal. Replenishment. Revival.

In 2010, I have set bold goals rather than resolutions. Mine involve self education, or what I like to call “cultural literacy.” I’ve penned a few lessons, talked to some trusted mentors and mind mapped my way through it.

In order to design my program, I brainstormed all of the different things I learned in 2009. The list was long. But the most important lesson: I learned how to find my voice by experimenting with ideas. I studied the people, places and things that make me sing.

And I asked a whole lot of questions.

Learning As Teachers

I unearthed an amazing treasure chest of guides and partners in the different nooks and crannies of 2009. A student of the world with a massive thirst for knowledge, I’ve always believed that the lessons we absorb through daily experience only make us crave more. And, for me, sharing those lessons is when we really start to learn.

This kind of teaching doesn’t require certification. Just a dash of curiosity.

In 2010, I’ll share the pillars of my self-designed program in a series of posts. But before we end, and begin again, I’d love to hear from you.

What do you want to learn more about in 2010? A language? A skill? Ways to improve yourself?

Maybe you have one learning goal. Maybe 17. Reflect on what you’ve taught others and what they taught you. Even thinking about this for 60 seconds can bring awareness to passions we never even knew we possessed. Anything goes.

Think broadly, think deeply. Look forward, back, up and down. There is no test. All answers are correct.

Happy New Year my friends.
