January Reader Survey: Just A Minute

Post writtenLast Minute by Laura Cococcia. You can follow Laura on Twitter.

Just a Minute is the brainchild of August Street; good friend Liss at Daydream Lily introduced me to this in a post last week on her beautiful site.

What a perfect way to start the kickoff the 2010 cultural conversation – and survey the ultra-cool TJCC reader scene.

Think of it as a little ‘who, what, where, why, when’ exercise. Your chance to feature you - and share your authentic experiences. Your personal culture. What shapes you, interests you, moves you.

And, since I have just a minute until the doors close on the airplane to NYC, I thought it quite appropriate timing.

I’ll go first:

Reading… The New Yorker, American Way (sorry, I’ve been flying) and Foreign Policy.  Just finished Push by Sapphire and started Let The Great World Spin by Colum McCann, all in the same day. May steal the January People from the woman boarding in front of me. I’ll have to sweet talk her into it.

Drinking… Diet Coke. Not surprising. Planning on a small glass of red on the plane. Tried four new healthy fruit shakes this week. Might be time to replace the DC.

Listening… To my iPod after 3 weeks of not turning on any music. And when I return to the tunes, I feel happy. Always go back to the tried and true favorites: The Clientele, Led Zeppelin, The Carpenters.

P.S. on this one: Anyone who is able to draw a connection among the three gets a special prize. I haven’t been able to do it yet.

Wanting…To start my poetry class. I feel some creative juices brewing just thinking about it. Sage to the rescue.

Watching… 30 Rock. That’s it. I haven’t watched TV much in 3 years. In the last few weeks, I did manage to catch a couple of between-errand movies and saw The Young Victoria and Precious. Remarkably different contexts – yet threaded by the demonstrating the power of finding one’s own authentic voice.

Loving…Friendships. New, old, online and offline. You know who you are.

What are you up to, thinking, loving, reading? Just takes a minute. Pick one or choose all. Let’s talk it up.

All the Best to you in 2010 – looking forward to what’s to come!

Reading: I read a business and a ‘fun’ book at the same time – right now its Inbound Marketing by Brian Halligan, Dharmesh Shah, and David Meerman Scott – a straightforward account of the transition from traditional outbound marketing activities to inbound techniques and Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane a fantastic mystery set in the 50s in the Harbor Islands of Boston.

Drinking: Despite my best intentions, I’m drinking Diet Pepsi with breakfast – its leftover from my New Years’ Day football watching party – wouldn’t want it to go bad.

Listening: Just loaded up my iPod with music from the Zac Brown Band, Darius Rucker, and David Nail – my 4+ years in GA drastically changed my musical tastes.

Wanting: Feeling very content – perhaps all airlines to add an additional 5″ between rows. I’ve always had difficulty fitting comfortably with my height in my legs.

Watching: Modern Family – just ‘discovered’ it a few weeks back – best new show IMHO

Loving: I’m wrapped up in blankets on a snowy day with lots of time to read and work on my site

Lisa – that’s a fab list! I love that you’re wrapped up in blankets…I think that’s my next task today. LOVE your new site! So excited to see what’s next!

Reading – Glass Castles – I don’t read through books quickly (don’t say it’s a fast read or it will take me 3 years) so far so good. A bit of Real Simple since it helps me figure out ways to do things quickly and effectively.

Drinking – water out of my new Canadian Olympics sigg bottle and loving it as I love Canada and I love the Olympics

Listening – the new John Mayer Album and trying to figure out if I like it or not. I immediately liked his last 3 albums but this one is taking a bit of time. Bad Romance by Lady Gaga is starting to grow on me.

Wanting – summer it’s freezing in Chicago but sunny!

Watching – this very second? I’m ashamed to say I’m watching Tabatha’s Salon Makeover (it’s in the background). But I just started watching The Wire

Loving – having friendships that stand the test of time, even when so much time goes by. That is something to put on a gratitude list.

  • Hey Bethany! I love Glass Castles, one of my favorites ever. And I would wholeheartedly agree with your last comment about relationships. Life’s best currency. :)

  • Reading: Esquire. Also, just started Seven Days in the Art World by Sarah Thornton.

Drinking: Green tea, coffee, water. And just got a blender for Christmas, so smoothies are on the horizon.

Listening: Silversun Pickups, Tegan & Sara’s “Sainthood,” The Ting Tings, Brother Ali, The Thermals, and dozens more.

Wanting: To square away my financial loose ends.

Watching: Too much reality TV, which is where our remote seems to land for too many hours a day. I’ve seen so much of The First 48, I feel like I spend more time with the Miami police department than their own kids do.

Loving: The freshness of a new year and the knowledge that I’m on the right track.

Thanks for posting this exercise and best wishes in 2010!

  • Reading: http://www.thejcconline.com (of course!) and just started a book called

Drinking: Am off DC 99% (sneak one in about once every three weeks) so lots of water, perrier and the occasional green tea ice tea.

Listening: Love my “Low Key” mix on my ipod that is a combo of Jack Johnson, Dave Matthews, Norah Jones, and more.

Wanting: To launch my new company and have it be a huge success. Feel so anxious and nervous about this but we’ll know more next week!!! Also really want a week away in total relaxation and disconnection. Get too caught up in work, twitter, facebook, blogs, and such that I never really am turned off.

Watching: Nothing on TV…it’s cricket season so JB rules the TV. Too much work to do anyway!

Loving: My new naturopath. She rules and has made me feel so much better even after just one visit.

  • Laura says:

Thanks so much Justin! Truly loved your last post – made me clear out my head a bit. I also love what you’re listening too – a few I know, a few I don’t, so this gives me some good fun fodder for my listening collection. Happy 2010!

  • Laura says:

@Danielle – You’re so wonderful, living in the present moment reading this. Your company WILL be a huge success because you have the commitment. And, so glad you’re seeing a naturopath. Love it and can’t wait to hear more about it!
