I admit - I’m not a huge fan of New Year’s resolutions.
For me, I’ve always been disappointed about what I “haven’t” achieved on that list.
But they can be extremely useful for others. For many, it marks a time of rebirth and renewal. It makes us reflect and plan and strive and motivate.
In fact, I’ve seen loads of fabulous lists this week as people are taking stock, whether or not they’ve been created in the context of the New Year. Danielle LaPorte’s “The Best List Ever” is my current fave. Matt, the brilliant mind behind Life Without Pants (my new exciting find) posted an inspirational roundup of “Ten Things I’m Looking Forward To In 2010.”
But I am going to make a list – a personal inventory – but am doing it differently. I’m calling it my This Week Resolutions. Why wait? I don’t want This Week to feel left out. No time like the present.
However, these weren’t random – they were based on larger goals I recently set for myself. These three happen to come from my adventure, relationship and learning goals. More to come on those larger lists in future posts.
My This Week Resolutions
1. Book my next international vacation. Having just returned from Peru, I’m feeling the travel itch again. I’m deciding on a yoga retreat in Morocco or Buzios. I could ponder, get stuck in the research rut on Wikipedia or just simply book it. I’ll let you know what I choose, but it will be done by Saturday. (P.S. Votes are welcome)
2. Call 3 friends. Relocating to New York and starting a new job have all been amazing experiences these past few months, but I miss friends I haven’t had the time to have a good hearty chat with. I’m hoping it will be more than 3, but it’s my goal. Relationships are life’s most important currency and I want to make sure our banks are full.
3. Go to the MOMA. I recently fell in love with observing art. I can’t draw, paint or take wonderful photographs, but I want to learn. Best get to a place where art shines bright.
This is the conversation in my head every weekend: “Get your butt over to the MOMA.” Instead, I whine, complain I’m too tired and watch reruns of 30 Rock. And that’s OK. But this weekend is giving me a bit of a respite from work, so what am I waiting for?
That’s it. Just three. It’s doable. And specifically designed not to call out the wonderful time I’ll spend with family on Friday. It’s already a wonderful gift.
So, friends, what’s your This Week resolution? You don’t have to do 3 – one is OK. Or maybe you have 11. Would love to hear what you’re up to.

Laura,
Good to read your post. No 2010 resolutions, just look at what next week has to unfold for you!
My this weeks resolutions are:
* Sending out invitations to celebrate my 40th birthday next February (I have not done real big parties the last years, but I miss my friends coming over to celebrate in a big way!)
* Spending time playing with my children, outside in the snow. Today is my last working day of 2010, so let’s go out and do crazy, childish things!
* Re-organizing storage: getting rid of old stuff (will take a lot of time, because I will certainly be looking at every piece of paper, photo, etc. LOL).
That’s it! Was nice to think about this, see you next week?!
Emiel
You did it! These are some fabulous New Year’s Resolutions – and you’re already well on your way to achieving them :)
@Emiel – Thanks so much for your list! I’ll have to add re-organizing storage to my next week’s list! (how do I keep putting that one off? Let me know how it goes!)
@Christa – Thank you! Love to get things crossed off the list and feel fulfilled at the same time.
Thanks for the shout Laura! I like the idea of doing “weekly” resolutions. I am a huge nerd when it comes to list-making, but I know that I, and I’m sure a lot of other people, get so caught up in the day-to-day to-do’s that we lose track of our “resolutions” – the big weekly/monthly/annual goals we have for ourselves. It’s important to know that your daily tasks are leading up the the achievement of your overall goals. Great post and Happy New Year!
Of course, Matt! You deserve it and am psyched we’ve crossed paths. I’m a chronic list maker – and I wish there was a cure for it, but I think I’ve accepted that I’ll always be this way, for better or worse :) But the long-term – that’s the key. We’ll all hold each other to it! Have a wonderful New Year and I hope you’re enjoying some time off.
thanks for the link love.

Hi Laura, love the idea for the weekly resolutions. Why wait until New Year! I’ve just been working on my yearly plan:

But I think I’ll use our idea to break down some of the bigger tasks. I just like the sound of weekly resolutions rather than the usual to-do list. By the way if the idea of a yoga retreat in Marrakech sounds fantastic. Let me know if you find one☺
.-= steve´s last blog ..Goals for the New Year =-.
Hey Steve! I love your plan! I could probably do a bit more planning myself – maybe push myself to do a month? :) I have not yet found a yoga retreat in Marrakech, so I didn’t book my trip – but am searching as fast as I can for one. Aaah, the power of resolutions!
Thanks Danielle – you’re always such a creative inspiration!
